Match of the Day pundits agree on Manchester United season prediction

3 min read

Match of the Day pundits Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy have offered firm Manchester United predictions on where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could finish this season.

The Reds have enjoyed a resurgence in the Premier League of late, winning six of their last seven in the top-flight before a 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Boxing Day.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes bagged goals for United away at The Foxes, only for Harvey Barnes and an Axel Tuanzebe own goal to ensure a draw at the King Power Stadium.

The result left United just four points adrift of leaders Liverpool heading into Sunday’s slate of games, but pundits Shearer and Murphy don’t believe Solskjaer‘s men can sustain a title challenge.

Gary Lineker posed the question after analysis on Match of the Day of United’s draw at Leicester, with the pundits providing swift replies.

Lineker asked: “Realistically, can any of these sides (Leicester and United) win the title? Only if something goes wrong at Liverpool.”

Murphy responded: “I can’t see it. I think Liverpool are too strong and too confident.”

Shearer added: “(Both teams) challenging for top four.”

Solskjaer has previously commented on whether United are in the title race, explaining: “There is noise around Man Utd anyway, so for us it’s about improving as a team, taking one game at a time – and we have to, that’s the name of the game.

Manchester United were frustrated after a late equaliser denied them a win at Leicester in the early kick-off on Boxing Day.

United twice took the lead with goals from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, but a late Jamie Vardy strike meant the match ended 2-2, meaning the Reds missed an opportunity to leapfrog the Foxes and take second spot in the Premier League table.

United don’t have too long to wait to get back to winning ways, as they host Wolves on Tuesday night.

“That is the only way that you are going to challenge for anything at the end of the season anyway so it’s not something that we talk about.

“The only thing that we talk about and focus on is improving day by day and learning, and how to deal with certain situations and maybe now at the moment we are getting praise and that’s another thing to learn to deal with.”
