Man Utd are interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid in this summer’s transfer window, having identified the former Tottenham Hotspur defender as an ideal competitor to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
MEN Sport understands that United had planned to make a move for Trippier in the January transfer window until he was suspended for a breach of betting regulations. United are now considering a formal bid for the 30-year-old this summer.
The former Manchester City academy player, who was recently named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man Euro 2020 squad ahead of United defender Wan-Bissaka, will be out of contract with the La Liga champions at the end of next season and is understood to be making arrangements to return to England permanently.
MEN Sport also understands that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified Trippier as an ideal competitor to Wan-Bissaka, after being unsatisfied with the right-back’s offensive output.
Is Solskjaer correct in identifying Trippier as a more attacking option, in comparison to Wan-Bissaka? And, how do the two players compare in terms of key attributes?
We compared both Trippier and Wan-Bissaka’s key attributes, on the world’s leading football management simulation title Football Manager 2021, to find out the strengths and weaknesses of both players, ahead of a potential United summer move for Trippier.
Take a look at the player’s full Football Manager 2021 profiles below.
Let’s get the basic comparisons out of the way first. Wan-Bissaka is much younger (23) than Trippier (30), which should make him a more valuable asset in the long-term.
Both players are comfortable at both right-back and right wing-back, with Trippier also able to play as a right midfielder if needed.
And, both players are right-footed, with similar weight (72kg), but Wan-Bissaka (183cm) is slightly taller than Trippier (178cm).
Now let’s take a look at their key attributes.
In the graphic above, the most important attributes for the role of full-back (with the duty of support) have been highlighted to help sort out where each player is strongest.
In terms of technical attributes, Trippier is rated as being significantly more gifted than Wan-Bissaka, with the Atletico defender having higher attributes in corners, crossing, first touch, free-kick taking, long shots, marking, passing and technique.
However, the United right-back does have significantly higher tackling, with a maximum of 20 out of 20 for the discipline, compared to 15 out of 20 for Trippier who is also no slouch when it comes to winning back the ball.
When it comes to their mental attributes, it’s a lot more even, with both players differing significantly in their strengths and weaknesses.
Wan-Bissaka beats Trippier significantly in aggression, bravery and flair, whilst Trippier has higher leadership, off the ball, positioning and vision.
In regards to anticipation, composure, concentration, decisions, determination, teamwork and work rate, they are very closely matched.
But the current United right-back has much higher physical attributes, with higher acceleration, agility, jumping reach, pace and strength.
Overall, according to Football Manager’s database, Trippier is the more accomplished player on a technical level, offers a greater threat in attacking areas and is more creative while Wan-Bissaka is more robust defensively with advantages in his physical and mental attributes too.
Trippier’s potential arrival could provide Solskjaer with a more attacking full-back option, which could make the difference in tight games, giving United two very offensive full-backs on both sides of the pitch, and given his greater age the 30-year-old could step in to provide a new dimension out wide and give Wan-Bissaka the time and example by which to improve his own game in attack.
After all, when United need a more solid and defensively-minded full-back, there are few better than the former Crystal Palace youngster. Rather than being a threat to his place, Trippier could be a complementary option to cover for where Wan-Bissaka is weaker at the moment in games where his relative lack of influence in the opponent’s half might otherwise be exposed.
Would you be happy to see United sign Tripper this summer?
