With Phil Jones being allowed to leave for nothing, amid interest from six Premier League clubs, it’s expected the 28-year-old will take the No 4 jersey.
Jones was actually signed instead of Varane in 2011 but, due to injuries, has never been able to realise his full potential.
United have been good to the England international, helping him through his rehabilitation. But football is a ruthless business and Jones’ days at Old Trafford are numbered.
Therefore, Varane should be the club’s next No 4.
Both Jones and Owen Hargreaves have been plagued by injury issues with that number splashed across their back. With the World Cup winner, they’re hopeful things will be different.
