Manchester United youngster Charlie McNeill issues apology for Liverpool dig

2 min read

Manchester United youngster Charlie McNeill has apologised for aiming a dig at Liverpool after saying ‘it would be good to rub it in their faces’ ahead of their potential FA Youth Cup clash.

United’s Under-18s will either face Liverpool or Sutton United in the next round of the competition after McNeill scored in a 2-0 win over Salford on Wednesday night to help them progress.

After the match, the 17-year-old forward stoked up the rivalry with Liverpool by admitting he is relishing the prospect of knocking them out of the Youth Cup.

However, McNeill has since took to social media to apologise for his comments, insisting he did not intend to come across disrespectful.

In a post on Instagram, he wrote: ‘I just wanted to say my interview last night, I said a thing I probably shouldn’t have said and I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful to anyone!

‘I have learnt from my mistake and I’ll take this on into the future.’

McNeill is widely regarded as one of United’s brightest prospects in their academy and has scored 15 times from as many games in all competitions this season.

He is not the first player from United or Liverpool to make a barb at the other club.

Last year, James Milner was heard on camera calling United ‘f***ing w****rs’ during their Premier League title celebrations while there has been numerous incidents in matches throughout the years.

Liverpool’s Under-18 side, who lost 1-0 to United last Saturday courtesy of McNeill’s solitary strike, are heavily fancied to book their spot in the next round against their rivals when they take on Sutton next week.
