Manchester United vs West Brom highlights and reaction

5 min read

Manchester United edged a drab encounter at Old Trafford on Saturday as Bruno Fernandes’ penalty secured a 1-0 win over West Brom.

United went into the international break off the back of a 3-1 victory over Everton but they never hit their stride against the winless Baggies, and were perhaps fortunate to come away with all three points.

West Brom had a penalty overturned while the scores were level at 0-0 in the first half, before United were awarded a spot-kick of their own moments later following a handball.

Fernandes was denied from 12 yards but, just as was the case against PSG last month, a retake was ordered as a result of encroachment from the opposing goalkeeper.

Next up for United is another home game against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, as the Reds aim to avenge their defeat in Turkey on matchday three.

A fast break from United leads to a chance for Martial.

United have a void yet to be filled

Now that Juan Mata has come off, it seems United players are taking it in turns to play on the right wing.

Fernandes the latest to step across, though Rashford is probably the man tasked with his until the end of this game.

So odd that they didn’t recruit a first team player for that position in the summer.

66′ – UTD 1-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Huge chance for United

United should have doubled their lead.

Rashford misses from six yards out.

Another superb save from Johnstone but he should have done better.

64′ – UTD 1-0 WBAMarcus Banks

West Brom hit the bar

Robinson has only been on the pitch for a few minutes but Robinson rattles the crossbar.

De Gea was beaten but the woodwork saves him.

West Brom changes

Robson-Kanu and Robinson on, Diangana and Grant off.

61′ – UTD 1-0 WBAMarcus Banks

United substitution

Cavani on, Mata off.

57′ – UTD 1-0 WBADominic Booth

Correct decisions

Johnstone was absolutely miles off his line. There’s not even a debate to be had there. In my personal view, none of the three penalty calls in this game should be given, but the Furlong handball one is a spot-kick by the letter of the law, as Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings would say. The letter.

Goal for United! (Fernandes)

Second time lucky for Fernandes.

54′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Penalty to be retaken

Johnstone judged to be off his line. Take two.

53′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Fernandes misses

52′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Penalty to United

Handball. Given.

51′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

A huge chance for West Brom but De Gea is on hand to deny him.

Crucial save from the Spaniard.

Coote overturns the decision.

No penalty.

Penalty to West Brom

Fernandes downs Gallagher and Coote points to the spot.

VAR check.

45′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Second half begins…

Unchanged for the second half.

Half-time ratings: Martial and Rashford poor

De Gea

Seemed to get the faintest of touches to deny West Brom. 6

Absent in the final third too often again. 5

Fine. 6

Good. 6

Okay league debut. 6

Rather redundant. 5

Tidy with the ball. 6

Ropey. 5

Too passive too often. 5

Getting frustrated. 5

Should have made it 1-0. 5

43′ – UTD 0-0 WBASamuel Luckhurst

United paying for team selection mistake

Matic is superfluous in this team, as suspected.

United have been a tad too cautious with the XI and they need more creativity behind the front four (eg. Van de Beek). Fernandes is coming deeper because he isn’t having any joy as the 10.

41′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Chance for West Brom

West Brom almost take the lead through Bartley.

The corner is whipped in and the defender tries a smart reverse header which narrowly goes over the bar.

A warning for United.

39′ – UTD 0-0 WBADominic Booth

United’s transfer failure is being exposed

If this game was being played during a transfer window, have absolutely no doubt that the words Jadon and Sancho would be trending. United don’t have a first team right winger and it means all their attacking build up is getting channelled down the left, with Mata tucking in.

Greenwood’s absence has only exacerbated this issue.

36′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Maguire denied

Bartley is down after taking a fierce shot from Maguire straight to the face.

West Brom are given a free-kick for a push.

33′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Chance for United

Much better from United.

A sumptuous pass from Fernandes picks out Mata but Johnstone blocks his ball to Martial.

The pass deserved a finish.

32′ – UTD 0-0 WBADominic Booth

“United shape is too rigid at the moment”

Wonder if it’s worth switching Martial and Rashford temporarily. Ivanovic doesn’t have the pace to deal with Rashford and Martial has looked a little disinterested so far.

The United shape is too rigid at the moment, not enough movement among their forwards.

30′ – UTD 0-0 WBASamuel Luckhurst

Maguire impressive again

United have not been scintillating but have had the openings to be ahead.

Martial’s tumble there was an act of desperation that possibly suggests that earlier miss is still playing on his mind. Rashford has looked rusty so far as well and Mata has not been involved enough.

The standout performer so far in red has probably been the authoritative Maguire.

26′ – UTD 0-0 WBAMarcus Banks

Martial penalty appeal

Martial goes down in the box and wants a penalty.

David Coote isn’t interested much to the forward’s frustration.

VAR are checking the incident.

The check is over and nothing is given.
