Manchester United treatment of Donny van de Beek baffles Danny Blind

2 min read

Danny Blind has questioned Manchester United’s signing of Donny van de Beek after he was completely unused in the drab draw with Chelsea.

Van de Beek, 23, is the only member of United’s midfield department yet to start in the Premier League or Champions League after arriving from Ajax in the summer for £40million.

Blind, father of former United defender Daley, could not understand why Van de Beek remained on the bench in a match where there were only five attempts on target.

Van de Beek scored on his United debut against Crystal Palace and played a key role in their winners at Brighton and Newcastle but his only starts have come in the Carabao Cup.

“What was he signed for?” Blind said on Ziggo Sport. “I listened to Solskjaer’s press conference and he had nothing but praise for Donny. Yet he did not even give him a brief cameo.

“He bought him to beef up the squad. Why not use that squad depth?”

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood emerged ahead of Van de Beek against Chelsea, while Axel Tuanzebe, Nemanja Matic and Dean Henderson were also unused.

Solskjaer has had to field questions about Van de Beek’s absence from line-ups since he overlooked him for the 4-1 win at Newcastle.

“He’ll get his game time,” Solskjaer said. “He’s been fantastic in the group. I think you see today and in training, he’s so neat and tidy, I don’t think he lost the ball once.

“It’s about finding the balance in the team. We’ve won 4-1 today and you’re asking why I didn’t start one of the players. He’ll have a very good impact on the team.”

When pressed on Van de Beek’s absence after the Chelsea draw, Solskjaer replied: “Don’t worry about that. He’ll get his games. Don’t worry about that.

“It’s easy to say who should be playing and more difficult to say who shouldn’t.”
