Manchester United transfer news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists club must be ‘realistic’ in summer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved to temper expectations of a free-spending Manchester United this summer, given the economic impact of Covid.

United are set to announce their latest quarterly financial results on Wednesday after recording a £23.2million loss last year as a consequence of the pandemic.

Solskjaer wants to strengthen his squad but said United must be realistic.

‘There are going to be less and less transfers happening with all these changes,’ the United boss said.

‘The lack of income, the finances has affected everyone. We have to be realistic and responsible in the way we do business on and off the pitch.

‘There are improvements on the training ground, the stadium — we have to look at the whole picture. Where can we spend money? And how much is there? It’s just the real world now.’

Solskjaer suggested he may look to the club’s youngsters instead, after handing 17-year-old Shola Shoretire his debut last month.

‘You can look at it in different ways with a rebuild,’ he added. ‘We have academy players we can give opportunities to. All clubs in the world are going through the same situation so it’s no different for us.’

United travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night without Paul Pogba, who has yet to rejoin training following a thigh problem.
