Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has informed the club that he will not renew his contract at Old Trafford and will leave the club this summer.

The 34-year-old has impressed during his debut campaign at the Theatre of Dreams and his three goals in the last seven days has taken his tally for the season to ten goals in 31 appearances.

United are desperate to keep Cavani but they need the Uruguayan to agree on a 12-month extension clause that was installed in his contract last summer.

But Cavani feels unsettled at the club and he is longing to see family, who have been unable to visit him in the north-west since he arrived last October.

Solskjaer tried to persuade Cavani to stay at the club by telling him he’d feel different once supporters returned to Old Trafford but Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla claims the striker told the club after the victory against Burnley on Sunday that he intended to return to South America.

Boca Juniors are leading the race for Cavani’s signature, as the move would afford the former Paris Saint-Germain striker to be within an hour flight of his homeland.

Cavani’s decision will come as a huge blow for Solskjaer, who will have to enter the market for a centre forward.

United are interested in both Harry Kane and Erling Haaland but the difficult nature of those transfers left the club hoping that Cavani could postpone the requirement for a new striker by another 12 months.

Despite his intention to leave, Cavani is set to lead the line for the remainder of the season with Anthony Martial not expected to return for the run-in.

United are through to the Europa League semi-finals to play Roma, while they trail Manchester City be eight points in the Premier League.
