Teden Mengi was inundated with messages from his Manchester United teammates after making his senior debut for the club.
The 18-year-old defender made his first ever first-team appearance in the 2-1 Europa League last 16 victory over LASK as he came on as a late substitute for Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
It means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now handed eight senior debuts to academy players over the course of the 2019/20 season, with Mengi unfortunate not to have got the call sooner.
But Mengi’s contemporary Mason Greenwood led the congratulations on social media, with Jesse Lingard, Deji Sotona, Mark Helm, Ethan Galbraith and D’mani Mellor all commenting on the striker’s post.
Greenwood posted on Instagram: “The feeling when your boy makes his Manchester United debut, congrats Teden Mengi” alongside a picture of him posing and smiling.
Former United youngster Dion McGhee was also among those to comment, while Mengi responded by saying simply: “My brother” with two love-heart emojis.
Plenty of senior United players also sent messages to Mengi on Instagram.
Solskjaer revealed Greenwood and Mengi had a close relationship, while talking about the faith United have in the young centre-back, who had impressed in Under-23s and Under-18s football over the past campaign.
“He’s a leader, a [proper] centre-back,” said Solskjaer of Mengi after the game. “He’s one we believe in. He’s in the same age group as Mason [Greenwood]. They grew up together. He’s strong, quick, good on the ball. We’ve got a decent player there.”
