Manchester United player ratings: Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba awful

2 min read

David de Gea

A lamb to the slaughter. Not visibly at fault for any of the goals and had the misfortune of playing behind William Prunier impressionists. 4

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Had to be told when to go forward again and Son Heung-min rode roughshod over him. Been out of form since he came back. 2

Eric Bailly

Bailly’s return, though deserved, went as badly as one could have predicted. All over the place for some of the goals and could not neuter Son or Harry Kane. 2

Harry Maguire

The nadir of his United career. Haphazard defending, clumsy tackling and too cumbersome to keep up with Son, Kane and Tanguy Ndombele. 1

Luke Shaw

Abandoned his station time and again and Tottenham scored a couple of goals down his side. Utterly humiliated and should have been sent off. 0

Nemanja Matic

Tottenham preyed on Matic’s immobility and he just could not keep up with their fast breaks. Hooked at the interval. 2

Paul Pogba

Bulldozed by compatriot Ndombele and so casual at times. Conceded a penalty and did not vindicate his starting role after performing midweek at Brighton. 1

Bruno Fernandes

Scored the opener but ceded possession time and again and Tottenham were too quick-witted for Fernandes. Substituted at half-time. 3

Mason Greenwood

Could not get into the game whatsoever amid Tottenham’s quick counter-attacking. Just as well he has got a two-week rest. 3

Marcus Rashford

Hit the post, although he was eventually flagged offside. Out of sorts yet again and could not reinvigorate United. 3

Anthony Martial

Stupidly sent off for reacting to Erik Lamela at 2-1 and United folded like cards. Suspended for three league games. 2

Subs

Fred

Did not excel in the damage limitation exercise. 4

Scott McTominay

Same as Fred. 4

Donny van de Beek

Came on late enough not to be tarred with the same brush. 5

Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The team Solskjaer selected was logical enough and he was let down by individual errors. But he did nothing as Spurs ran riot in the first-half and by then the game was over. 2
