Manchester United player ratings: Edinson Cavani and Donny van de Beek good

2 min read

David de Gea

The first goal did not reflect well on him and he was not well prepared for James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick, that ended in injury. Came off hurt. 3

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Another sub-par performance and even when United were dominant Wan-Bissaka was absent from their attacks. 5

Victor Lindelof

Marcus Rashford was inexplicably tasked with marking Jan Bednarek at the corner when it should have been a centre half. Had an easier second-half. 6

Harry Maguire

Like Lindelof, Maguire may wonder why he was not on Bednarek. Southampton’s speed caused Maguire problems. Led laudably. 6

Alex Telles

Sloppy with his passing and did not look comfortable in dealing with the proactive Kyle Walker-Peters. 6

Nemanja Matic

Started fluently and played a key role in United’s attacks until Southampton matched the visitors’ intensity. 6

Fred

Purposeful, pressed and looked comfortable on the right of a diamond again. 7

Donny van de Beek

Key to United’s early dominance even though he was on the left and drew a number of fouls. 7

Bruno Fernandes

Should have buried an easy chance from Alex McCarthy’s parry at 1-0. Rewarded United for their dominance by scoring in the second-half. 6

Mason Greenwood

Shot wide with the goal gaping at 0-0 and was denied by McCarthy. A missed opportunity in every sense – he was substituted at half-time. 4

Marcus Rashford

Could have had a penalty in the first-half and missed a great chance in the second but was offside. Kept going until the end and crossed for Cavani. 7

Subs

Dean Henderson

Handled shots with care and motivated teammates. 7

Edinson Cavani

United benefited from his experience and he played a key role in Fernandes scoring. Finished instinctively to make it 2-2 and then scored the winner in injury-time. 9

Brandon Williams

Came on late. 5

Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

United created chances with the diamond, though its looseness was exploited. The introduction of Cavani was key. 8
