Manchester United morning headlines as Sancho still a transfer target

3 min read

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Wednesday, 7 October.

Sancho to stay on United shortlist

Manchester United will keep Jadon Sancho high on their transfer shortlist after failing to land the Borussia Dortmund winger during the transfer window.

Sancho was United’s top target but the Reds were unwilling to meet Dortmund’s €120million asking price for the 20-year-old.

United are expected to revive their interest next summer, and while they could launch a bid to lure Sancho to Old Trafford in January, the feeling is that Dortmund will not entertain the notion of a key player leaving the club mid-season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are likely to face competition from other clubs for Sancho’s signature next summer.

United explored alternatives to the England international, including loan deals for Ousmane Dembele and Ismaila Sarr, before completing deadline day deals for 18-year-old prospects Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri, both of whom are expected to become future stars in the first-team.

United will not pursue EFL signings

United have no intention of signing players from the English Football League despite failing to secure a right winger during the international window.

Premier League clubs are free to do business with lower league clubs until October 16.

And while United explored a possible loan move for Watford’s Sarr, the Reds are not expected to return to that deal with the Hornets only interested in selling the Senegalese winger.

United do not plan to revive interest in Bournemouth’s David Brooks or Swansea City’s Joe Rodon, both of whom the club monitored over the summer.

Cavani handed No.7 shirt

New United signing Edinson Cavani has been handed the No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer on deadline day after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July, signing a one-year deal with an option for a second.

And the Uruguayan has been handed the famous No.7 jersey, which he has previously donned for Napoli and his country.

United’s No.7 has been worn by legends like George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, but was most recently worn by flop Alexis Sanchez.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester,” said Cavani.

“I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return. My conversation with the manager has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
