Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to directly respond to Patrice Evra’s assertion Manchester United played with a ‘safety jacket’ in their dire draw with Chelsea.
There were only five attempts on target in the 0-0 between two teams that had already conceded 21 Premier League goals between them and a conservative Chelsea switched to a back three.
United kept their first clean sheet of the new league season in their first home game since the 6-1 trouncing by Tottenham and Evra lamented a ‘boring game’.
“I think we started a little bit slow in the first 20 or 25 minutes but if there was going to be a winner in the last hour it was going to be us,” Solskjaer said. “We created the biggest chances. There are two good teams out there and we decided to get out of the box to get a foothold in the game.
“We didn’t create too many chances, but then Marcus had a good chance in the first-half, great save by the ‘keeper, Marcus had a good shot towards the end that I thought was going to be winner. You’ve got to remember we’re playing against a good team here, so I’m pleased for the players.”
United had beaten Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain in their previous games but Solskjaer was conscious of how they would react to another impressive triumph in Paris and viewed the point positively. After their last victory over PSG in March 2019, United won two of their last 12 games of the season.
Fred and Scott McTominay started for the third game running as Donny van de Beek was completely unused and the Dutchman is the only United midfielder yet to start in the Premier League or Champions League.
“Scott and Fred have done really well this week,” Solskjaer added. “They’ve given us a foothold in games, they are a great combination together and we felt after PSG this week we needed to have the energy in there with them.
“The last time after PSG we struggled big-time. We lost to Arsenal, went 12 games and probably didn’t deserve to win any of the games and struggled. Today we got a point on the board against a team and we were the team that had the biggest chances to win it if there was a winner.”
