Manchester United have made Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres their priority target for the summer window, according to reports in Spain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a new partner for Harry Maguire at the heart of United’s defence in the upcoming transfer window.

Sevilla’s Jules Koundé and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane are both on United’s shortlist.

But according to AS, United have made Torres their ‘first option’ and have marked him as a ‘priority transfer’.

The report claims that Villarreal have not received an official offer for Torres and will demand that United meet his €50 million release clause, which will rise to €65m in the final 15 days of the transfer window.

Last month, reports claimed that the 24-year-old defender would be open to a move to United this summer.

In an interview with Football.London earlier this year, former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who now manages Villarreal, backed the Spain international to play at the ‘highest level’.

‘Pau Torres is an amazing player – I think he’s top,’ Emery said.

‘I’ve been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and I’ve never seen a centre-back like Pau Torres.

‘I think he’s going to play at the highest level, he’s playing now in the national team but he can play in the top teams in the Europe very soon.’
