Harry Maguire is set to become Manchester United‘s third signing of the summer, with a deal reportedly in the ‘final stages’.
Maguire has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s number one defensive target since the the start of the summer and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been in discussions over an £80million move for the 26-year-old Leicester star.
This would make Maguire the most expensive defender of all time, exceeding the world-record £75m fee Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk back in January 2018.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, United’s deal for Maguire is in the ‘closing stages’, with Leicester respecting the centre-back’s wish to secure a move to Old Trafford.
Though Manchester City were frontrunners to land Maguire earlier this summer, the England international has expressed his desire to join United ever since their interest came to light.
The Foxes have been resigned to losing Maguire for several weeks and talks have been advancing at a rapid pace, with desperate to get a deal over the line before deadline day on August 8.
Talk of Maguire’s impending switch to United intensified after the central defender missed Leicester City training this week.
However, Leicester maintain that Maguire has been suffering with an illness and this was the reason for him skipping Monday’s training session.
Maguire reportedly phoned in sick and was advised him to stay at home while the rest of Brendan Rodgers’ squad trained at the club’s Belvoir Drive Training Ground.
Maguire managed 90 minutes of Leicester’s 2-1 win over Stoke at the weekend and Rodgers had nothing but praise for the Englishman’s attitude in pre-season.
‘He’s been brilliant since the first day of pre-season,’ the Leicester manager said.
‘There’s a lot of speculation around Harry but he’s just got on with it.
‘Like I’ve always said, we’re all pretty relaxed with it.
‘We’re looking to prepare the whole team and squad and Harry’s a part of that.
‘He’s been excellent for us and he’s working very hard.’
