Manchester United ‘guarded’ against Erling Haaland transfer saga after Jadon Sancho failed attempt

3 min read

Manchester United are reportedly wary of another transfer fiasco with Borussia Dortmund, this time over Erling Haaland, after their prolonged and ultimately futile attempts to sign Jadon Sancho last summer.

The Red Devils had England international Sancho as their No 1 target in the last summer window, but a deal failed to materialise after the Bundesliga club did not budge from their £108m asking price.

Now, 20-year-old star forward Haaland is among United’s top targets this summer but according to The Athletic, the boardroom at Old Trafford will assess whether the Norwegian is a viable option, given the hefty financial demands for his signature.

But United are reluctant to get embroiled into another transfer saga with the Bundesliga club

Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola was pictured over a week ago attending meetings with Barcelona and Real Madrid, as he travelled alongside Haaland’s father Alfie.

United, as well as neighbours Man City and rivals Chelsea, are all exploring the possibility of signing Haaland, who has scored 49 goals in 52 games for Dortmund since arriving from RB Salzburg in January 2020.

The report adds that Tottenham star Harry Kane is next on United’s list of forwards, though not at the reported £120m asking price.

Reports emerged over the weekend that Kane would ask to leave Spurs this summer if they don’t qualify for the Champions League and their bid for a top-four spot was damaged by a 3-1 loss to United on Sunday.

However, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is said to have dismissed the prospect of selling his star asset to another English club.

Another pursuit of 21-year-old Sancho is not off the table either, though Dortmund’s £108m asking price from last year would have to come down.

A move for a forward also depends on the future of Edinson Cavani, who impressed and scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday.

The Uruguayan’s deal expires this summer, with a return to South America mooted, but the 34-year-old does have an option to extend by another year.

Meanwhile, reports this weekend stated Raiola wants to make Haaland the first ‘£1m-per-week’ footballer.

In addition to an asking price from Dortmund of £158m, due to significant fees for his agent and father, a deal for Haaland would be financially tough for all suitors this summer.

David de Gea is currently United’s top earner, at £375,000-a-week, though his future is also up in the air after Dean Henderson usurped him as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No 1 goalkeeper.
