United are keen to recruit a new central defender this summer and Varane is on their shortlist alongside Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
Varane, meanwhile, will have just one year remaining on his current contract with Madrid this summer and is yet to agree terms over a new deal with the Spanish club.
According to AS, Varane has decided to leave Madrid at the end of the season as he seeks a new challenge in a different league.
The report claims that Madrid are still holding out hope that they can convince Varane to stay but they are willing to sell him this summer if he officially requests to leave.
It’s also understood that Madrid are aware of the difficulty in persuading Varane to stay because his desire to leave is not driven by money.
Like United, Madrid are also targeting Torres and Kounde as potential replacements for Varane, while David Alaba, who wants to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, is also on their shortlist.
Speaking last month, Paul Scholes urged United to sign a world-class centre-back in order to properly challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
‘I think they’re missing a real, dominant centre-back,’ Scholes told BT Sport.
‘If you look back at history at the teams who win leagues, they have real leaders in their back four.
‘I think Maguire possibly could be but I think they need someone with him who can be really dominant in that position, really commanding, can bully a centre forward, can demand from the rest of the squad around him, on and off the pitch as well.’
