Manchester United give trial to Dundee United defender Kerr Smith

Manchester United have taken 15-year-old Dundee United youngster Kerr Smith on trial.

Smith has already attracted interest from Everton and Aston Villa, having had a trial with the midlands club, and appeared for Dundee United’s irst-team in a pre-season friendly against Sheffield United.

United regularly have players on trial at U15 level as they look to put together next year’s scholar group and Dundee United’s sporting director Tony Asghar confirmed Smith has spent time at Carrington.

“Kerr and his parents are down to earth,” he told Courier Sport. “They’ve spoken to us and he’d like to stay with Dundee United but we can’t stop clubs wanting to take a look at him.

“You’re talking about some of the biggest clubs in the world. Plenty of clubs have asked to have a look at him but we can’t let him go to them all.

“We’re delighted that he’s had this chance at Villa and now Manchester United. He’s trained very well at both, I believe.

“It’s great for him but we want the best players at our football club and Kerr has the potential to be one of them. He’s already shown that against Sheffield United. He’s got a great attitude.”

United have recruited heavily at youth level in recent months, the most recent deal being for France Under-17s defender Willy Kambwala, who signed on deadline day from Sochaux and made his debut for the club’s Under-18s against Derby last weekend.

United also welcomed Alejandro Garnacho, Alvaro Fernandez, Marc Jurado, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Charlie McNeill, Joe Hugill, Logan Pye and Radek Vitek in the summer.
