It’s understood that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to bolster his defence at the end of the season and is targeting a new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire.
Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde is on United’s shortlist, although the Premier League side are reportedly unwilling to trigger his £68 million release clause.
According to multiple reports, United are also targeting Varane and the France international is considered as a more attainable signing this summer.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Madrid are expecting United to firm up their interest at the end of the season having failed to sign the French defender during Jose Mourinho’s reign.
The report also claims that United view Varane as a player who would quickly adapt to the Premier League.
Elsewhere, Manchester Evening News reports that Madrid are willing to sell Varane to United.
Varane has been offered a new contract but Madrid are said to be ‘pessimistic’ over the defender’s desire to extend his deal.
Varane’s current contract expires at the end of next season and Madrid are looking to secure a transfer fee for the 27-year-old this summer rather than see him leave for free in 2022.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes has urged Jurgen Klopp’s side to challenge United for Varane’s signature.
‘Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,’ Barnes told BonusCodeBets.
‘He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play and for Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business.
‘He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.’
