Dayot Upamecano is suspended for RB Leipzig’s game against Manchester United next week after picking up his third yellow card of the group phase against Istanbul Basaksehir.
Upamecano went into the referee’s book for a mistimed 53rd-minute foul. The highly rated defender was also cautioned in Leipzig’s wins over Basaksehir and Paris Saint-Germain on October 20 and November 4 respectively.
Axel Tuanzebe is suspended for United’s game against PSG after collecting bookings against PSG and Basaksehir twice, but no United players are at risk of suspension against Leipzig through yellow-card accumulation. Harry Maguire, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay have each been booked once across the first four matchdays.
Upamecano was part of the Leipzig team that lost 5-0 at Old Trafford at the end of October, when Marcus Rashford scored a hat-trick off the bench.
United scouted centre-back Upamecano, 22, when he was a teenager but decided against moving for the France international, who was heavily linked with a summer move to Old Trafford. Upamecano is contracted to Leipzig until 2023 but has a reputed €42million release clause and is expected to leave next year.
Prior to United’s game against Leipzig on matchday two, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of fresh links to Upamecano: “There’s always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United. I’ve always tried to respect they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player we are linked to.”
