Manchester United fans will love Dean Henderson’s dig at City ahead of the derby

Dean Henderson has issued a battle cry ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, telling his teammates that they must paint the city red.

United have been in excellent form in recent weeks but will take a break from their growing Premier League title challenge on Wednesday night as they return to League Cup action.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will welcome neighbours City to Old Trafford for a one-legged tie, with the winner booking a place in April’s final against Tottenham.

“The city is mostly red, and we need to paint it red. But we’re getting better all the time, so hopefully we can get a good result”

Henderson has played in several Manchester derbies at youth level but knows that it will hardly compare to such a crucial match between the two sides and has made it clear that nothing short of a victory will suffice.

“Listen, it’s a completely different ball game from Academy level to first team, so this one will mean a lot,” he told United’s official site.

“But obviously the vibe will be massive throughout the city.

“One team has got to win it, so I think both teams will go for it. We’ll probably take the game to them and have a go, and see what comes off.

“I know a few Man City fans from when I was growing up, and obviously there was rivalry between us, even at school and things like that. To beat them and to be involved in it would be a dream come true.

“They’re the sort of things you think about as a young kid. It’d be amazing, and something I’m really looking forward to.”

United have been unsuccessful in semi-finals under Solskjaer, having lost in three last season as they fell at the same stage to the same opposition in the League Cup, as well as suffering defeats in the FA Cup to Chelsea and the Europa League to Sevilla.

Shot-stopper Henderson believes that finally breaking their duck in semi-finals will give a great boost to United going forward this season.

“Massive,” Henderson said when asked how important reaching the final is for the club.

“The club’s built on silverware. We need to win trophies and obviously we’re improving and evolving on the pitch, but no one cares unless we win trophies. So we need to put that to the forefront of our minds, and we need to find a way to do that.

“Whether it’s the Carabao Cup, the Premier League or the Europa League or the FA Cup, we need to turn these good performances into silverware.”
