Manchester United fans have hit out at Marco van Basten over his comments about Donny van de Beek.
The Dutch football legend has questioned whether Van de Beek made the right decision in joining United this summer.
Van de Beek has gone from being a key player at Ajax to starting just two Carabao Cup games so far this season, leading plenty of pundits – such as Patrice Evra – to ask why United signed him in the summer.
Former Ajax and AC Milan star Van Basten is the latest to question the move. He argued that a lack of football will be detrimental to Van de Beek’s development at United. Hitting out at both United and the player himself, the 55-year-old said the midfielder should have remained at Ajax.
“It is very bad for such a boy to only play six or seven times in a year,” Van Basten told Ziggo Sport.
“That’s terrible for your rhythm! You can earn a lot more, but you also have to see where you can play. Is it about a five-year contract that he can sign? No, that’s bull****. Then you shouldn’t go to Manchester United, but wait with it or for another club. You have to want to play football every week, and such a club is then bad for your career.”
Unsurprisingly, United fans were unimpressed with his comments and here is the best of the reaction below.
As plenty of United fans have pointed out, Van Basten was not so vocal when Van de Beek’s former Ajax teammate, Frenkie De Jong, moved to Barcelona in 2019 and did not make an immediate impact on their first-team.
In fact, Van Basten instead recently criticised another former Ajax star, Matthijs de Ligt, over his decision to snub Barca for a move to Juventus instead.
