Manchester United fans choose their best XI

3 min read

Manchester United’s season so far has been the definition of inconsistency, with memorable victories accompanied by results that fans would swiftly like to forget.

The highs and lows have been the same for the United players, with some shining in their performances and others facing a battle to retain their spots in the side.

With the end of the week also signalling the end of international football until the end of March, it’s the ideal time for the cobwebs to be dusted away and a run of form to be built heading into the festive season.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be settled on the core of his side, the fans believe that some changes should be made to the starting line-up.

We asked fans to rate the performances of the United squad so far this season and, using the responses, have assembled a team of the highest-rated players.

David de Gea

There are no surprises between the sticks, where David de Gea has rekindled his best form after some poor performances at the start of the calendar year. He was rated at 7 by the supporters, ahead of Dean Henderson with 6.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Another unsurprising choice, Wan-Bissaka has shown considerable improvements this season and they have been recognised by United fans, who rated him as the fifth-best so far this season.

Victor Lindelof

United’s defensive issues this season have been well documented but Victor Lindelof has emerged as the best-rated centre-back by the fans with an average of 6.4

Axel Tuanzebe

Perhaps the first biggest surprise of the selection, Tuanzebe was the second-highest-rated centre-back in the squad with 6. That saw him edge Harry Maguire, who has been rated at 5.7.

Luke Shaw

The England international has excelled this season and was rated by the fans as the sixth-highest player overall. Alex Telles has not featured enough to be rated but the fans have Shaw far ahead of Brandon Williams, rated at 4.7.

Scott McTominay

United fans seem to prefer a four-man midfield, with four central midfielders among the highest-rated XI. McTominay slots in with a rating of 6.3, higher than Nemanja Matic’s 5.1

Fred

Ranked as the third-highest-rated United player, Fred has been one of Solskjaer’s best players so far this season. His rating of 7.2 from the fans makes him an easy fit.

Bruno Fernandes

The highest-rated United player by the fans, Fernandes averaged 8.4 and is the first name on the teamsheet in the eyes of the supporters.

United get their Premier League campaign back underway on Saturday when they welcome strugglers West Brom to Old Trafford.

The under-pressure Reds came from behind to beat Everton last time out thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ double and Edinson Cavani’s first goal for United.

The players are returning from the two-week international break, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to have as few injury and fitness concerns as possible among the stars coming back from international duty.

Donny van de Beek

Limited opportunities have been presented since his arrival from Ajax but Van de Beek has done enough to convince the fans of his displays. With a rating of 6.2 this season, his inclusion means there’s no spot for Paul Pogba, who rated 4.

Marcus Rashford

Part of the attacking trio that excelled post-lockdown last season, Rashford is the only one to have hit the ground running again this term. His 7.3 rating is the third-highest from the fans.

Edinson Cavani

An interesting development is found in the attack, where Cavani is rated as the second-highest option behind Rashford. His ranking of 5.8 edges Mason Greenwood at 5.7 and Anthony Martial at 5.6 but only slightly.
