Manchester United fans have been responding to Rio Ferdinand’s transfer plea.

Speaking on BT Sport, the former United defender outlined how he thinks the current centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are not up to scratch.

Instead, he urged United to target a new defender in the final week of the transfer window.

Posting a video of his analysis on Twitter, he asked United fans their thoughts on whether a centre-back was needed – here are some of the responses. Many United fans agree with his assessment.

Ferdinand had analysed United’s defeat to Crystal Palace before the chaotic 3-2 victory over Brighton. and argued that Maguire and Lindelof’s performances were not good enough.

He said: “It was the first game of the season the other day.

“You’re looking for a response, someone to set their stall out, but they did anything but that. It was slow, it was cumbersome. It was terrible to see, it disappoints in many ways.”

It led to Ferdinand arguing that a new defender was needed in the final week of the transfer window.

He said: “You look at Liverpool, the best team in the land – issues with the goalkeeper, they get Alisson, a big signing.

“Issues at centre-half —  van Dijk, bang, dealt with it.

He added: “I want Jadon Sancho to come to Man United, he’s a generational talent and will get people off their seats. A Man United player.

“But does he solve the fundamental problems I see in this team?

“Yes, they had a fantastic goals against record last season, but there are moments in games – or before games, even in the tunnel – where are centre-forwards looking across that line thinking ‘I’ll have to be at my absolute best to get an opportunity?’ I don’t think so.”
