Manchester United evening headlines as Solskjaer defends Greenwood

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Friday, October 23.

Ole hits out at Greenwood critics

Ole Gunner Solskjaer has hit out at the English media for targeting young star Mason Greenwood after the attacker missed the last two matchday squads due to a niggling injury.

Suggestions in the press reported that the Manchester United teenager missed out due to being late for training. Solskjaer insisted otherwise while defending Greenwood’s behaviour and attitude and criticising the media’s history with young players.

“The club has a great record, history and tradition of bringing players through,” Solskjaer said.

“That means from early on, you get good habits, we can trust you, you can express yourself. Mason has gone through this programme and done fantastic. He will be kicking on I am sure. He is a very exciting boy to work with.

“You [make yourself a target] when you play well. I am not concerned at all with Mason making a target of himself. He has come in, played fantastic, played his first league game against Tottenham last season, was brilliant and just kicked on.

“Yes, he has made a mistake this summer with England and suddenly the whole English press go after him. That is something we have to look after. He is a fantastic boy to work with.

“I have to disappoint you; he is never late for training. He is never a problem when he is on the training ground. He is always on time and I have seen the stories and some ex-United players talking about him, [when] they don’t know what they are talking about.

“We have photographers outside the training ground every day, they can see he is on time every day. I don’t know where these stories have come from.

“He has a good family behind him. He has had a good background in the academy. He is a good trainer. He trains really well. I cannot believe all these stories about him not being professional. That is something we have to deal with many other players at United.”

United provide team news update

Ahead of Saturday’s clash against Chelsea, which pits two teams fighting for a top-four finish against one another, United provided an injury update on the squad.

United are hopeful that Edinson Cavani, Harry Maguire, and Greenwood will all be available for selection. Cavani has not featured since his summer move, while Maguire and Greenwood both missed the midweek trip to Paris.

“I hope and expect all three of them to be available for selection,” Solskjaer said. “Of course, we’ve got a training session this morning but they’ve all got a chance, all of them.

“There are different reasons: Edinson wants to tick all the boxes that he’s gone through in his programme to be ready and make an impact. His last preparation is going to be today and then I will have a discussion. Yesterday seemed positive with Mason and Harry.”

New pre-match training kit released

In conjunction with Adidas and Humanrace, United unveiled a new, throwback pre-match training kit. The ‘snowflake’ blue and white kit had been worn by United in the early 1990s. The design has been resurrected as a part of Adidas’ collaboration with Humanrace creative director, Pharrell Williams.

Arsenal, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Bayern Munich have also had kits designed as a part of the project.

Speaking about the creative brief, Pharrell said: “History is what shapes the future, and sometimes in order to look forwards, first we need to look back.

“The most important part of the process with this collection was to learn of each club’s legacies and how each defining moment of their histories were captured and preserved from a design perspective. Each of the new jerseys are symbols of the five club’s legacies and a true celebration of the universality of sport.”
