Good evening, Manchester United fans. Here are your evening headlines for Tuesday, September 1.
Fred stance on United future
Donny van de Beek, 23, is on the verge of a £40million move from Ajax after agreeing personal terms with the club and passing a medical.
A versatile midfielder, the belief is that van de Beek will operate in a deeper role for Man Utd.
That may see Fred drop out of the team and likely intensify speculation that the Brazilian could move to Galatasaray.
However, MEN Sport understands there have been no conversations between the club and the player about his future and he remains happy at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer often paired Fred with Nemanja Matic in midfield, starting them in 16 of the final 19 games of the season.
The Brazilian joined the Reds from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52 million in 2018 and, after a difficult first season at the club, improved considerably last term and managed 39 starts under Solskjaer.
Netherlands boss offers van de Beek transfer update
Netherlands boss Dwight Lodeweges has confirmed van de Beek’s move to Manchester United is “almost done”.
The midfielder is edging towards a switch to Old Trafford for a fee of £40m after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms on Monday.
The final details of the paperwork are now being completed and will see the Ajax midfielder relocate to Manchester.
When asked if he considered leaving van de Beek out of the squad due to his transfer situation, Lodeweges said: “No, I think it is almost done. I think there is still an inspection attached to it. It will take place.
“I am certainly not going to send Donny home, because he would love to be here himself. That is also important.”
Neville lists five signings United need for title challenge
Gary Neville believes Manchester United are four or five signings away from mounting a Premier League title challenge.
The former Reds captain was frank in his assessment of the club’s squad, and even though Solskjaer’s side finished third last term, Neville believes the gap between themselves and the top of the table is still considerable.
“The Manchester United squad, as it stands today, cannot challenge for the Premier League title this season,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“The squad needed four or five improvements and it still needs four or five improvements. I’ve been saying that for a year and I’ve even nominated the positions I feel they need to improve
“They have to sign a world-class centre-back. For me, another midfield player. I also think a right-winger, a centre-forward and you have to look at left-back because of Luke Shaw’s injuries and the fact he has obviously been in and out of the team in the last two or three years.”

He added: “So, I think there are definitely four or five players required, and to not get three I think it would be a problem because of what the other clubs are doing.
“If Liverpool get Thiago, if Manchester City do what they are looking like they are going to do, and with Chelsea doing what they’ve done, they are your competitors and they all look like they are improving and moving forward.
“So, United have to do business but I do believe more in the strategy of what’s happening, they just have to get the deals over the line.”
