Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is on his way to Germany ahead of completing a January move to Bayer Leverkusen.
The MEN understand the 23-year-old is set to join Leverkusen, currently third in the Bundesliga, for a fee of around £1.5million after he rejected United’s offer of a new contract earlier this season.
Fosu-Mensah is out of contract at the end of the season but turned down the option of a new deal at Old Trafford because he felt ‘undervalued’ by the terms offered.
A source close to the player told the MEN that while Fosu-Mensah was sad to be leaving United he is ‘excited to get a fresh start and show people what he is really capable of.’
Ajax and Hertha Berlin have also pursued Fosu-Mensah, out of contract at the end of the season, and United were aware of interest from German clubs when they triggered the one-year extension in Fosu-Mensah’s deal last year.
Speaking last week manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he expected Fosu-Mensah to leave the club in the January transfer window.
“I’m not sure if he will stay or if he’s going to take an option now,” Solskjaer said. “He’s not played enough, so of course he’s been allowed to speak to clubs with a view to leaving now in January.
“It’s difficult when you have good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game-time. He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again.

“It might be end of January or in the summer where he finds somewhere else, he’s working hard so he’s ready for a move for any club he feels ready for.
United signed Fosu-Mensah from the Ajax academy in 2014 and, although a midfielder by trade, Fosu-Mensah came on at left-back for his debut aged 18 against Arsenal in February 2016. He made his full debut at centre-back against Watford three days later.
