Manchester United defender Ethan Laird rejoins first team training squad

2 min read

Ethan Laird has rejoined Manchester United first-team training ahead of the possible departure of Diogo Dalot.

Right-back Laird, 19, was promoted to the first-team sessions on July 8, but started for the Under-23s in their pre-season friendlies against Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers before lining up for the Under-21s in their EFL Trophy thrashing of Salford City on September 10.

Laird came off injured at the Peninsula Stadium and has generated interest from clubs in taking him on a season-long loan but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored him to the first-team squad.

Solskjaer named Laird among the prospects he had been impressed by when he was still the United caretaker manager and Laird was named in the travelling squad for their Europa League knockout games against Copenhagen and Sevilla in Cologne. He made his debut against Astana in the group stage last November and also came on in the 4-0 home win over AZ Alkmaar.

United U21s travel to Rochdale in their second EFL Trophy game tonight and Laird’s presence at Carrington on Tuesday morning all but confirms he will not take part. The MEN revealed United are keeping the senior and junior squads separate at their Carrington training complex so they can train in their own bubbles.

Laird’s addition to senior sessions takes Solskjaer’s first-team squad back up to 32 after James Garner joined Watford on a season-long loan. The MEN revealed Teden Mengi was promoted to the first-team squad earlier this month.

Dalot, 21, has been heavily linked with a move to AC Milan after starting one Premier League match in the last 16 months. The Portuguese was an unused substitute in last week’s Carabao Cup victory at Luton Town and last appeared in the league in February.

Auxiliary full-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah has entered the last year of his contract but was recalled ahead of Dalot when left-backs Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams were out injured for the win at Crystal Palace in July.

Fosu-Mensah, 22, started United’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace and was named in Frank de Boer’s Netherlands squad for next month’s friendly with Mexico and the Nations League game against Bosnia and Herzegovina,
