Manchester United have revealed their shirt numbers for the 2020/21 campaign after a busy end to the summer transfer window.
Donny van de Beek was still the only player to join United with just hours remaining until the deadline but Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo all followed suit on a frantic deadline day for the Red Devils.
Veteran striker Cavani was undoubtedly the highest-profile addition and it was confirmed on Tuesday that the Uruguayan would be wearing the No.7 shirt for the new season.
Legendary players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best have all worn the number before Cavani and the forward expressed his ‘great pride’ at being handed such an iconic shirt.
‘It will give me great pride to wear the No 7 shirt for Manchester United,’ he told ESPN.
‘Now I am going to prepare for this responsibility, do my best to be ready and enjoy it and I hope to make my mark at Manchester United.
‘I have two years of a contract with Manchester United. I want to give it my all here. I feel good.’
Van de Beek has been wearing the No.34 shirt – in honour of close friend Abdelhak Nour – and United have now confirmed the numbers of late arrivals Telles and Pellistri.
Brazil left-back Telles, who completed a £15.4million move from Porto, has been handed the No.27 shirt for the new season.
Pellistri, meanwhile, has been given the No.28 shirt following his £9m switch from Penarol.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Telles as a ‘fighter’ and a ‘winner’ after the full-back’s deadline day move to the Theatre of Dreams.
‘First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United,’ Solskjaer said.
‘He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.
‘He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.
‘Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.‘
Telles said: ‘To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.
‘You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.
‘I won many trophies at Porto and I want to continue that at United.
‘The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.‘
