The 30-year-old is a target for the Red Devils, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to sign a more attack-minded right-back to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Trippier joined Atletico from Tottenham in 2019 for a fee of around £20m and the La Liga giants are looking to recoup their outlay this summer.
However, despite their title success this term, the Spaniards are in financial disarray and United believe they can sign Trippier for significantly below Atletico’s £20m asking price, according to the Athletic.
It’s claimed United believe they can land Trippier for around £12m and they are negotiating in the knowledge that the defender is keen to return to the Premier League and his native north-west.
United’s priority is signing Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, as the England playmaker could break the club’s transfer record.
The Red Devils are relaxed over a move for Trippier, as Diogo Dalot has enjoyed a fine season with AC Milan and could return from the San Siro to compete with Wan-Bissaka if Trippier doesn’t arrive.
Solskjaer then wants to sign a centre-back, while a central midfielder could arrive if Paul Pogba leaves.
