Manchester United are close to finalising a deal for Uruguayan teenager Facundo Pellistri before the transfer deadline.
Uruguayan sources have told the MEN the move is all but done and United sources are optimistic about concluding the transfer this evening.
United have wanted to sign Penarol winger Pellistri for over a year and he could join for a fee of around €10million. It is believed he would go straight into the first-team squad if he joins.
United are still attempting to sign an established winger, as well as rookie wide players Pellistri and Amad Traore of Atalanta.
The MEN understands United want a proven winger to come into the squad straight away and believe they need younger options as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used Juan Mata, 32, and Jesse Lingard, 27, in wide roles again at Luton Town last month.
United are also keen for their new wingers to hasten the development of Mason Greenwood into a centre forward. Most of Greenwood’s starts have come from the right and the addition of specialist wingers would free him to play through the middle more often.
United have had a loan offer with the option to buy Ismaila Sarr for £25million rejected by Championship club Watford, who want a straight sale for the Senegalese.
Sarr, 22, only joined Watford last year and United have until October 16 to sign players in the EFL, should they wish to make another bid for Sarr, who is valued at around £45m.
United have not bought an out-and-out right winger since Wilfried Zaha – Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing – in the January transfer window in 2013.
