Manchester United scouts have reportedly identified Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret as a potential recruit, in order to provide competition to David de Gea.
United chiefs want an array of goalkeeping options at the club, with both De Gea and Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford futures uncertain.
De Gea remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice goalkeeper, despite coming under fire for a series of high-profile clangers this season.
With De Gea starting the 20/21 season as United’s No. 1, Henderson is expected to head out on loan again having enjoyed two seasons with Sheffield United.
Sergio Romero will likely remain as De Gea’s back-up but Solskjaer wants to add a young talent to his squad to add further competition for places.
And United’s scouts have recommended Meret, according to ESPN.
Meret is viewed as one of Europe’s most promising ‘keepers and has been capped at every age group, including the senior national team, by Italy.
The 23-year-old started 21 times in Serie A this season, while being between the sticks for six of Napoli’s Champions League matches, including a 2-0 win over Liverpool.
