Ryan Giggs has revealed he was punched in the stomach by Louis van Gaal, the first time he ever met the Dutchman. The Wales boss learned his trade as a coach under Van Gaal when working as his assistant during his one-year reign at Old Trafford in the 2015/16 season.
Van Gaal guided United to FA Cup glory before being replaced by Jose Mourinho in the hot-seat.
Giggs had previously taken caretaker charge of United following the sacking of David Moyes and the club kept him on after the appointment of Van Gaal.
Now the former winger has shed light on his first-ever meeting with Van Gaal, after the pair arranged to get together at a hotel to discuss plans for the upcoming season.
Speaking to Jamie Carragher on the Greatest Game Podcast, Giggs said: “He was different. He was very dominating.
“But that’s what he was like. He was very dominating and would be right up in your face.
“He would be a nightmare now with social distancing. He would be right up in your face, looking down on you and very direct.
“He looked after his staff and his players and he was a really good person but just very quirky.”
Giggs’ time at Old Trafford then came to an end following the dismissal of Van Gaal, as Mourinho arrived in controversial fashion following his sacking at Chelsea.
