Manchester United fans thought Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez would announce a transfer to their club today after a social media publicity stunt and they have been taunted by rivals.
On Sunday Saul tweeted: New club. Announcement in three days.”
And like promised the midfielder did announce a new club – the formation of a youth team in the Spanish coastal city of Elche called called Club Costa City.
United are in the market for a new midfielder this summer and Saul has been on their radar for some time.
The Atletico star drummed up speculation by teasing the announcement days in advance.
And football supporters took to social media to troll Red Devils fans.
One person wrote: “I dont care what he did to Liverpool he deserves a s**thousery award for how he has mocked Utd.”
Another added: “Made United fans look like mugs lmaooo.”
A third user tweeted: “The Mancs thought they were getting Saul, you’ll just have to stick with Fred.”
Meanwhile, United fans reacted angrily to the announcement with one proclaiming Saul was “probably the most hated man in Manchester right now.”
And a further fan said: “I’m a Man United fan and I even forgot about this announcement thing and after the Griezmann saga I decided not to follow this one.”
Another disappointed supporter noted: “Thought we were gonna see him and Bruno (Fernandes).”
If Saul does eventually make the move to Old Trafford he may have some making up to do with United supporters.
