Man Utd evening headlines as Greenwood releases England statement

3 min read

Good evening, Manchester United fans. Here are your evening headlines for Tuesday, September 8.

Greenwood apologises for breaking COVID-19 protocol

Manchester United and England forward Mason Greenwood found himself in hot water for breaking COVID-19 protocol while on England duty in Iceland on Sunday.

The teenager, along with Manchester City’s Phil Foden, was found to have broken strict rules which forbade England squad members from having guests at their hotel rooms in Reykjavik, the country’s capital.

Greenwood, 18, has today issued an apologetic statement, describing himself as “irresponsible”, while expressing remorse for the “embarrassment I have caused.”

The pair were cut from England’s travelling squad ahead of this evening’s UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark by manager Gareth Southgate.

Greenwood specifically apologised to Southgate in his statement released on the United club website: “I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.”

The United forward made his England senior debut as a late substitute in the Three Lions’ 1-0 win against Iceland on Saturday.

Competition for Brooks signing emerges

Manchester United are one of a handful of clubs tracking Bournemouth’s David Brooks this summer.

Leicester City are also the race to sign the 23-year-old, who missed a large portion of the Cherries’ 2019/20 campaign due to injury.

Brooks is contracted to the south coast club for another two seasons and it is believed that Bournemouth will demand £35 million to release him from that early.

The Wales man is a back-up option for Manchester United should their pursuit of Jadon Sancho fall by the wayside. However, MEN Sport understand Leicester are set to make a bid in the coming weeks.

Brooks is originally from Warrington and spent ten years with Manchester City as a schoolboy.

United youngsters trailed by Championship clubs

Manchester United academy graduate James Garner is to be sent on loan for the first time in his career in the coming weeks, along with a handful of the club’s other youth products.

Garner, 19, has been with United since the age of eight but has attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs and has held talks with Huddersfield Town, MEN Sport understands .

Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers, and Millwall have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder.

In order to gain regular game time this season, it appears Garner will get the benefit of a second-tier loan rather than making up the numbers at Old Trafford.

The addition of Donny van de Beek has squeezed the youth prospect further out of the first-team picture.

MEN Sport also understands right-back Ethan Laird, recent Wales debutant Dylan Levitt, and Spaniard Arnau Puigmal could be among others loaned out for valuable first-team experience away from Old Trafford.

Garner and company would join the likes of Tahith Chong on loan for the coming season; the Dutchman is spending the campaign in Germany with Werder Bremen.
