Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer delivers Tim Fosu-Mensah judgement after Crystal Palace

3 min read

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Tim Fosu-Mensah after the defender’s appearance against Crystal Palace. The defender made his first start for the club since May 2017. And he helped the Red Devils keep a clean sheet, filling in for Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at left-back.

Manchester United fans were expecting Diogo Dalot to get the nod at left-back, with both Shaw and Williams sidelined through injury.

But, instead, Fosu-Mensah was selected.

The defender did well at Selhurst Park, helping to nullify the threat of Jordan Ayew and helping the Red Devils keep a clean sheet.

And, speaking after the match, Solskjaer praised the Dutchman for his display.

“It’s been 16 months since the last time he played, he’s worked hard,” he said.

“It was hard, it was hard. But that’s what you work such a long time for, all these months, for moments like this.

“This is football and anything can happen so you have to be ready, especially at a club like this. You have to be ready and I was ready for this moment.

“It was quite special (being back at Selhurst). Every time I step on this pitch it’s a special feeling because I had a nice season here, with some great people so it’s special.”

On whether he was comfortable at left-back, he added: “Comfortable is a big word but I’ve played there before, I think I made my debut against Arsenal and came on as a left-back.

“I’ve not played there for a long time but I can play lots of positions.”

Solskjaer also said after the game that he wants his United side to smile and enjoy themselves, having looked a turgid outfit as recently as January.

“Yeah we need to smile, we need to go into this as in ‘we’ve earned this right’,” he added.

“No one thought this in January, that we were in with a shout for the top four and we’ve done fantastic since the restart and so we’ve got to smile, got to enjoy these games.

“These are the games that matter and that’s what it is at Man United, you need to step up and show your personality.”

Fosu-Mensah is in contention to start when United lock horns with Chelsea in their FA Cup showdown on Sunday.
