Here is your Manchester United morning digest on Tuesday, February 9.
United’s treatment of De Gea highlights reluctance
Manchester United’s goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis is a huge fan of David De Gea.
Hartis, who has been in his position at United since the summer of 2019, is particularly protective over the Spanish shot-stopper.
When the MEN revealed Dean Henderson had reported for pre-season training before De Gea in August, the goalkeeping coach is believed to have been worried about having to explain to the Spaniard why the former Sheffield United loanee was already back at Carrington.
De Gea has come under plenty of scrutiny recently due to his form in between the posts for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men. With a more-than-able deputy in Henderson, there have been calls for the England international to replace him.
However, United’s treatment of De Gea does indeed highlight a reluctance to promote Henderson.

Youngster signs professional deal
Manchester United have confirmed that academy graduate Shola Shoretire has signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford.
The 17-year-old recently scored a hat-trick in a 6-4 win against Blackburn Rovers Under-23s on Friday night and has begun training with the senior squad.
Shoretire was pictured next to Solskjaer as he put pen-to-paper on a long-term deal at United.
The England Under-16 international posted a picture of Instagram of himself signing the contract, with the caption: “It’s a dream come true to sign my first professional contract for my boyhood club! Such a proud day for me and my family.
“Thank you to everyone at the club and to my family who have helped me get to this moment. Hard work continues!”

Glazer’s comments could provide transfer hint
Manchester United co-owner Joel Glazer’s comments about Tom Brady after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ victory in the Super Bowl LV could provide a transfer hint for the Premier League giants.
The Buccaneers celebrated their first Super Bowl triumph in 18 years on Sunday night, with the brilliance of Brady helping Glazer’s franchise.
The 43-year-old veteran signed for the Buccaneers last year after a 20-year spell with the New England Patriots.
Glazer said after the game: “We found that person. Ten Super Bowl appearances, seven victories… Tom Brady.”
Speaking last week, Solskjaer could see similarities between Brady and their own addition of Edinson Cavani.
“I think when you operate at the top you try to widen your horizon and have a network you speak to and I’m very pleased for the Glazers and the owners that they play Super Bowl this weekend,” the United manager said.
“For me, the big learning from that is the Tom Brady story, what he does to keep going at such an age and to be so professional.

Manchester United smashed nine goals past Southampton on Tuesday night as they bounced back from disappointing results against Sheffield United and Arsenal in emphatic fashion.
The game was effectively over as a contest inside the first two minutes as Southampton were reduced to 10 men, but United still had to find the goals and they did exactly that, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (two), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James all getting on the scoresheet.

“He’s come into the club and brought them to the Super Bowl. It’s not him by himself, of course, but we tell our young players to be at the top level it’s not just natural talent, it’s dedication, hard work, focus.
“We’ve got the example of Edinson coming into our place and how much one player can influence a team. We’ve had Eric Cantona coming into the team with that experience.
Following the Buccaneers’ win on Sunday, United could look to add another experienced star to their squad at the end of the campaign.
