Man United player Rashford hits back at critics with Twitter message

2 min read

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has fired back at critics who told him to ‘focus on his football’ following his public campaign to help vulnerable children in the United Kingdom.

Rashford has been vocal in his efforts to raise much needed funds for charities around the country aiming to provide food for children in need.

The England international partnered with FareShare during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, helping to provide 3.7million meals a week to vulnerable people, just weeks after his successful campaign to extend the government’s free school meals scheme over summer.

While his work off the field has been rightly lauded by most, sections of supporters have urged the forward to focus on his football and returning to the form that United fans watched prior to his serious back injury.

Rashford issued the perfect response during United’s win against Brighton on Saturday, turning Ben White inside-out before smashing the ball home, his second goal of the season after scoring in midweek against Luton.

Prior to the game, he wrote on Twitter: “People NEED help! Children NEED our help. These children are the future of this country – our nurses, our doctors, our health care workers. One day we are going to NEED them and right now there are at least 1.1M of them who owe us nothing. How would we feel at our most vulnerable if they turned a blind eye to our needs? Think about it.

“Anyway, I’m off to ‘stick to my football’. Have a good weekend everyone.”

Rashford added to his Twitter thread after scoring the goal with a zipped-mouth emoji and was praised by United supporters in his replies.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also praised his forward after a dramatic game at the Amex Stadium.

He told MUTV: “I’m very happy for Marcus [Rashford] to get that goal.

“He was just a couple of inches offside on a counter-attack from Mason’s [Greenwood] cross. We did see some moments we didn’t see last week, so we are getting a bit better.”
