Man United morning headlines as Van de Beek wish revealed

3 min read

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Monday 26 October.

United fans want Van de Beek at CM

Manchester United fans want to see summer signing Donny van de Beek in the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield, according to a poll conducted by MEN Sport.

Van de Beek has endured a frustrating start to life as a United player since joining from Ajax with the Netherlands international still waiting for his first league start.

The 23-year-old was an unused substitute during United’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Saturday as Solskjaer again opted for the Fred-Scott McTominay partnership in midfield that served the Norwegian well against Paris Saint-Germain.

The majority of fans asked in MEN Sport’s poll want to see Van de Beek deployed in central midfield, with 43.2 per cent of 7,108 voters choosing that position over central attacking midfield or as either a left or right winger.

Speaking after the Chelsea game, Solskjaer insisted that Van de Beek will receive more opportunities.

“Don’t worry about that,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “He’ll get his games. Don’t worry about that.

“It’s easy to say who should be playing and more difficult to say who shouldn’t.”

James’ confidence high – Solskjaer

Meanwhile, Solskjaer has said that Daniel James’ confidence is ‘high’ despite the winger’s ineffective display against Chelsea.

The 22-year-old retained his place in Solskjaer’s line-up from the win over Newcastle United but was hooked off after 58 minutes having failed to trouble the Blues defence.

And Solskjaer says he will be patient with the Wales international, who has not scored in the league since August 2019.

“Dan’s confidence is high,” said Solskjaer.

“Because he’s starting games with the quality of players he’s in the team with. Today was one of those days where he played against some good players as well, he had some moments, and we keep on working.

“Dan’s had a really good impact at the club and we’re looking forward to developing him more.”

Transfer failings impacting Solskjaer debate

United’s failure to land transfer targets in Solskjaer’s two preferred positions is impacting the current selection debate at the club, argues MEN Sport’s Dominic Booth.

Solskjaer was criticised over the weekend for leaving Van de Beek, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood on the bench for the Chelsea game.

However, Booth believes it is important to remember that the Old Trafford decision makers failed to secure Solskjaer’s top target Jadon Sancho and a world-class centre-back.

“Perhaps Solskjaer would have a better idea of how to use his deadline day signings Cavani and [Alex] Telles if they had arrived earlier in the window, rather than in a last-gasp trolley dash,” writes Booth.

“Perhaps he saw Van de Beek as someone who could complement Sancho, or perhaps he simply needs more time to assess the Dutchman. Perhaps United are now waiting for Facundo Pellistri to develop into a viable right-wing option, or for Amad Diallo to arrive from Atalanta.

“Solskjaer has always championed himself as a manager who values the person as much as the player. In an interview during lockdown, he revealed the words he values most in his United squad are “trust” and “respect”, which he noticed instantly with Bruno Fernandes and no doubt saw in the much-coveted Sancho too.

“If the United manager is taking a little time to integrate his new signings into his squad, that is fair enough. It’s something Sir Alex Ferguson did with success through his legendary Old Trafford tenure.”
