Here are the Manchester United morning headlines for Friday, August 7.
Roma takeover opens door for Smalling transfer
US businessman Dan Friedkin has completed his takeover of Roma after 10 months of negotiations with his compatriot James Pallotta.
According to reports in the Italian press (Calciomercato), that could see the Serie A club revive their interest in signing Manchester United centre-half Chris Smalling after negotiations stalled under their previous owners.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a successful season in the Italian capital, and looked conspicuous by his absence in yesterday’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Sevilla, having left the club after his deal expired.
Here’s everything you need to know about the story.
Rojo plots next career move
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held talks with Marcos Rojo after he returned to England.
The defender could be set to leave Old Trafford after six years this summer, having expressed a desire to return to his native Argentina and continue at Estudiantes.
He only made one appearance for the club during last season’s loan, due to a mix of injuries and the coronavirus pandemic, but he wants to remain there going forward. He is contracted at Old Trafford until 2021.
“I spoke to Solskjaer, the coach, about two weeks ago. Because I had to go back to England,” Rojo told Infobae.
“He said to me: ‘Look, now the season is over and everyone has a few days off. Then we go to play the Europa League… I’m not going to count on you because you haven’t trained for four months.
“My idea is also to try to stay at Estudiantes. I played a game, got injured and all of this happened.
“That is why I will see in September if the loan can be extended and continue for a few more months.”
Owen Hargreaves names surprise player that would complement Jadon Sancho
Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the club should follow up the signing of Jadon Sancho with veteran Croatia international Mario Mandzukic.
The 39-year-old pundit is regularly involved in BT Sport’s Bundesliga coverage, having spent 10 years at Bayern Munich. He’s seen a lot of Sancho at Borussia Dortmund and suggested what he might bring to Old Trafford.
He then added the Reds ought to consider signing 34-year-old Mandzukic, who is out of contract after a short stint with Qatari side Al-Duhail.
Hargreaves said: “17 goals, 16 assists, those numbers are outrageous at this level for a player of his young age. He can play off the right, he can play in the hole, he can play off the left.
“He gives them goals, gives them assists and Jadon gives you something really special. He dribbles, plays off the cuff and he’s almost unplayable. I’m all for it. I think he’s just what they need.
“Maybe you then go and get Mario Mandzukic on a free, a different type of centre-forward.”
