Man United morning headlines as Dortmund hold up Jadon Sancho transfer

3 min read

Here are the Manchester United morning headlines for Wednesday, August 5.

Dortmund demands could see United walk away from Sancho deal

Manchester United are prepared to walk away from negotiations over Jadon Sancho due to Borussia Dortmund’s financial demands, the MEN understands.

Dortmund are believed to be holding out for £108million for the England forward, who hit double figures for both goals and assists in last season’s Bundesliga.

The MEN understands United are not worried about Dortmund’s apparent August 10 deadline for a deal to be agreed, and the English club is yet to reach an agreement with Sancho’s representatives, contrary to some reports.

United still have alternative options in their sights, including Germany-based duo Kingsley Coman and Rabbi Matondo.

Sancho’s wage demands are also thought to be a potential concern, with the player expected to look for an increase on his current £75,000-per-week Dortmund deal, but the principal issue at this stage appears to be the failure to reach an agreement on the forward’s transfer valuation.

Gomes opens up on end of ‘beautiful chapter’ at Old Trafford

Angel Gomes has taken some time to reflect on his United exit, but the young midfielder has finally broken his silence on his decision to leave the club where he made his professional debut.

Gomes, who was on United’s books since the age of six, left in June upon the expiry of his contract, having failed to agree terms on a new deal.

“Sadly the time has come to end a beautiful chapter that has been my life for 14 years,” the England under-20 international wrote on Instagram.

“Being from Salford, Manchester United is all I have ever known. I went from playing on my estate, pretending to be Wayne Rooney to being in the academy and doing the same. May 21st 2017 I made my Premier League debut for the club of my dreams aged 16 replacing the legend himself ‘Wayne Rooney’.”

Thanking United’s fans as well as “every single individual” at the club, he said: “It is time I take the next step in my career, I hope you can all be proud off what I go on to achieve [sic].”

Williams rewarded for breakthrough season with new United deal

Brandon Williams has signed a new deal with the club, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2024.

The 19-year-old, who made his debut in the EFL Cup victory over Rochdale in September, made 33 appearances in a breakout season with the club, scoring his first United goal in a 3-3 Premier League draw against Sheffield United.

“Signing this contract is another really proud moment for myself and my family,” said Williams, who has mostly been used at left-back.

“Having been at Manchester United since I was seven years old, it’s genuinely a dream come true to be playing in the first team.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Williams for his “excellent” campaign.

“This new deal is a real testament to his hard work and the progress that he has made since his debut,” he said.

“Brandon never looked back after stepping up from the academy and having come all the way through the system he understands what it means to play for Manchester United.”
