Man United manager Solskjaer blasts Lamela for role in Martial red card

2 min read

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasted Tottenham winger Erik Lamela for helping to get Antony Martial sent off during Manchester United’s capitulation to Tottenham at Old Trafford.

United were down 2-1 when Lamela made contact with Martial while waiting for a Tottenham corner. Martial responded by slapping Lamela near the throat and the Argentine initially grabbed his throat before going to the floor.

That prompted referee Anthony Taylor to show Martial a straight red card and United fell apart after that, losing 6-1 to Jose Mourinho’s side.

But Solskjaer was furious at Lamela’s role in the incident and said he’d have criticised him if it was one of his players who had behaved like that.

“He must be having an operation on his throat, it’s a bad reaction by Anthony, it’s no excuse because the game’s not lost there and then, but we were in the game then,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

“If that was one of my players I’d hang him out to dry because you don’t go down like that. If Anthony had gone down it could have been going the other way. But he shouldn’t react like that.

“There are two [red cards] there, well done Anthony for not going down to con the ref to send Lamela off, he puts his arm on Anthony’s chest and throat.

“Anthony knows he can’t react like this but come on, you can’t go down like that, it’s an absolute joke, if that was my son he’d live on bread and water for two weeks.”

VAR did not encourage Taylor to take another look at the incident or look at Lamela’s conduct in making contact with Martial in a similar error and Solskjaer was visibly furious on the touchline as Martial was ordered off.
