Man United lining up Marcel Brands as director of football and more rumours

3 min read

Manchester United are lining up a move for Everton’s Marcel Brands to become the club’s first director of football, according to reports.

The Dutchman has earned a stellar reputation after leading Everton’s transfer policy in recent years, masterminding the signings of James Rodriguez and others.

However, his contract at Goodison Park is due to expire at the end of the season and United are said to be keen on bringing him across the north west.

According to the Sun, friends of the 58-year-old believe it would be very difficult for Brands to turn down the advances of United.

There could be competition in the hunt for his signature, however, as it’s added that Serie A side Roma are also keen on landing his services.

Brands has 20 years of experience in Holland, where he held roles with RKC Waalwijk, AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, before moving to Everton in 2018.

He was behind Everton’s impressive summer spending, where James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure were among those added to Carlo Ancelotti’s ranks.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s historic rivals Leeds United are among the clubs in the hunt to sign Dean Henderson on loan in January, according to the Sun.

The stopper returned to Old Trafford in the summer following two successful loan stints with Sheffield United but has struggled for game-time.

Kept at the club to compete with David de Gea, the Spaniard’s form has increased significantly this term and that has left Henderson short of opportunities.

Henderson is keen on leaving on loan for the second half of the season in order to boost his playing time ahead of the delayed European Championships.
