Man United keeper Dean Henderson expects to start vs Basasksehir

2 min read

Dean Henderson expects to start for Manchester United in their Champions League group stage game against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The MEN reported Henderson would start in the away leg three weeks ago and the 23-year-old goalkeeper is also believed to have been told by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he is set for selection in the return match at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

United were shambolic in their 2-1 defeat in Istanbul but Henderson was not blameworthy for either of the goals. David de Gea started in United’s previous European wins over RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain.

Henderson has started three times for United since he returned from a second season-long loan with Sheffield United, with his other two outings coming in the League Cup wins over Luton Town and Brighton.

The United academy graduate came on at half-time to make his England debut against the Republic of Ireland earlier this month but Henderson is yet to oust De Gea from the number one spot at United.

Although United have sieved 14 goals in eight league games De Gea has not been obviously culpable for any of them and he made vital saves against Newcastle and West Brom in games that were deadlocked before United went on to win.

The MEN reported last month the United coaching staff feel De Gea has stepped up his training performances at Carrington amid competition from Henderson.

The presence of Henderson has prompted the United goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis to modify De Gea’s warm-up before games in that he is now tasked with pinging passes to Henderson on one wing and third-choice ‘keeper Lee Grant on the other flank. Henderson executed such a pass on his United debut against Luton and De Gea’s distribution has drawn criticism in recent years.

Despite his respectable form, De Gea had been dropped by Spain coach Luis Enrique in favour of Unai Simon, who started all three of their internationals this month against the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain.
