Man United: Keane tells Bruno to ‘get over’ criticism of performances against ‘Big Six’ sides

3 min read

Roy Keane has told Bruno Fernandes to ‘get on with it, don’t be such a baby’ after the Manchester United star defended himself against criticism regarding performances against Big Six sides.

United travel to the Etihad Stadium amid growing concerns over the Red Devils’ displays against their biggest rivals, following last week’s drab stalemate against Chelsea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have wowed with free-flowing attacking football this season but have put in tentative, cautious performances against rivals vying for European football.

United have failed to beat any of their Big Six rivals this season, with Fernandes the main recipient of criticism for failing to deliver on the big stage. The Portuguese has failed to score from open play against their biggest rivals this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports before Sunday’s mammoth clash with Pep Guardiola’s side, Fernandes plead his case regarding his displays, but former United captain Roy Keane has told the Portuguese midfielder to ‘get on with it’.

‘Bizarre. Lot of nonsense there. Talking about a lot of stats. Get on with the football,’ the Sky Sports pundit said ahead of the game. ‘I don’t know why these players worry about ex players and pundits, just get on with it.

‘Nobody is saying he has not done well. He’s been brilliant. But if you are playing for Manchester United and not performing in the big games of course you are going to be criticised.

‘He talks about wanting to win league titles, he has never won one. So it is difficult for him. It is all new to him.

‘He is right in a sense that when Man United play badly he does get criticised but other lads have to turn up as well, of course we can’t just say it is up to him.

‘He is a big player for them and if he doesn’t turn up in the big games he is going to get criticised obviously.’

Fellow pundits Micah Richards and Graeme Souness leapt to the 26-year-old’s defence, with the ex-City star insisting that United are over-reliant on the playmaker, while Souness praised Fernandes’ leadership skills.

But Keane questioned the United star’s attitude when withdrawn by Solskjaer.

‘There’s nothing wrong with being taken off and shaking your head for 10 seconds but if you are walking off and one of your team-mates is coming on and you’re throwing your arms up in the air that is disrespectful to your team-mates and you are talking about a leader?

‘If I was coming on and the player coming off was shaking his head I’d have a quiet word in the dressing room. I find it disrespectful.

‘We will see what he does against Man City. We will see what he does on the football pitch. That’s it.

‘I know they have to do interviews and respond to criticism but just get on with it, don’t be such a baby. Focus on the game today and produce against a great Man City team. If he does well we praise him and if he doesn’t he better be ready.’
