Man United headlines as Van de Beek compared to club legend, Perisic linked

3 min read

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Thursday, 17 September.

New signing compared to United legend

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has drawn comparisons between former team-mate Paul Scholes and new signing Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman is sporting director at Ajax and is well placed to make the comparison between the two, having seen Van de Beek develop through the age ranks at the Amsterdam club’s famed academy.

Van der Sar specifically noted the duo’s ability to score goals, arriving from deeper positions in midfield, before delivering a hammer blow from the edge of the box or just inside the penalty area.

“I’d compare him a little bit to Scholesy, although Scholesy had a cracker of a shot from 30/40 yards out and that’s not Donny’s strength, but he likes to come into the box and chip in with goals,” the former Dutch international goalkeeper stated.

He did go on to say that such comparisons would be unfair as he would be unlikely to replicate Scholes’ output at his peak, but that the building blocks were there.

Sancho alternative available in swap deal

New reports claim that Manchester United could add Croatian international Ivan Perisic to their squad for the upcoming season, if a deal can be struck with Inter.

The Italian giants are reportedly interested in bringing Chris Smalling to Milan, and are willing to offload Perisic as a makeweight in the deal, according to FC Inter News.

The 31-year-old spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, deputising for Leroy Sane, who the German club failed to snag before a knee injury ruled him out for the campaign.

However, Jadon Sancho remains United’s leading transfer target and the club are unlikely to pursue a deal for Perisic if they are able to prise the winger away from Borussia Dortmund.

United teen following in Rooney footsteps

Teenage forward Mason Greenwood has been listed as a nominee for the 2020 Golden Boy award, a prize gifted to the best young player under the age of 21 across Europe each calendar year.

Greenwood has made the cut, retained in the 40-man shortlist, reduced from the initial 100-man longlist.

The 18-year-old follows a host of United youngsters to have been nominated for the prestigious prize, none more so than 2004 victor Wayne Rooney.

Since the award’s inception in 2003, two United players have been crowned Golden Boy, with Anderson claiming the honour in 2008 as well. Mario Balotelli and Raheem Sterling have also been crowned Europe’s finest under-21 talent in the past decade.

Greenwood will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of recent winners Kylian Mbappe, Matthijs de Ligt and João Felix.
