Manchester United fans have slammed Danny Murphy’s suggestion that Paul Pogba will leave the club if Donny van de Beek joins this summer.
Van de Beek is set to become United’s first signing of the summer in the coming days but personal terms are yet to be agreed with a medical still requiring completion.
Murphy believes his impending arrival could force Pogba out of the club, despite his agent Mino Raiola claiming the Frenchman is happy to stay at Old Trafford with talks over a new contract expected to begin soon.
The former Liverpool man told talkSPORT: “I think that Pogba could be off. That signing, to me, says Pogba is off.
“Why would you buy a player who is an attacking midfielder when you’ve already got two attacking midfielders? You can’t play them all.”
Murphy ignores the fact that Pogba has not been used as an attacking midfielder under Solskjaer, instead being deployed in a deeper midfield role alongside Nemanja Matic. Van de Beek is also not primarily an attacking midfield and should prove to be a useful rotation option in what promises to be a gruelling season.
United fans are not impressed with his suggestion and believe both players will have a role to play next season.
Back in May, Rio Ferdinand waxed lyrical over Van de Beek’s abilities.
He said: “One of his best traits when I watch him is his ability to drift into positions. It’s very difficult for a centre-half to mark him. He goes in that little corridor of doubt in between the midfield and the centre-halves where he frees himself up to make those passes or get shots off.”
