Man United fans say the same thing as Edinson Cavani is handed the No.7 shirt

Manchester United fans have criticised the club’s decision to hand Edinson Cavani the famed No.7 shirt.

The Uruguayan striker signed on transfer deadline day on a free transfer following his summer departure from Paris Saint-Germain, putting pen to paper on one year deal with the option of a further 12-months.

Cavani will wear the No.7 shirt during his first season at United, following in a long line of legendary figures to have worn the number.

Yet, after the club’s failure to sign Jadon Sancho in the transfer window, it has not gone down well among supporters who imagined that the England international would inherit the jersey.

Sancho was United’s top transfer target throughout the summer but they have once again failed to sign him as Borussia Dortmund held firm in their stance that he would not be leaving since the club’s deadline of August 10 passed.

While not giving up on the transfer, United were unwilling to pay Dortmund’s 120 million euro valuation in an up front payment, resulting in Sancho remaining at Signal Iduna Park for at least another season.

Missing out on Sancho has angered lots of supporters since the window shut at 11pm on Monday and seeing Cavani get the No.7 instead of the 20-year-old has rubbed salt in the wounds.

Plenty of fans have argued that the prestigious number should have gone to a player set for a long-term future at Old Trafford instead of a 33-year-old coming to the end of his career.

Whilst the No.7 is held in high esteem by fans and players alike – after being worn by legends like Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham – its recent history at United has been chequered.

Alexis Sanchez, Memphis Depay and Angel Di Maria are the three most recent occupiers of the number and none managed to make much of an impression at Old Trafford.
