Manchester United fans expect the club to be beaten to the signing of Ajax playmaker Donny van de Beek this summer.
United supporters are still awaiting their first signing of the summer having watched rivals Manchester City and Chelsea invest heavily in their playing squad in the current transfer window.
Van de Beek was left out of Ajax’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag confirming the player’s omission from the squad was due to developments over his future. It’s currently unknown whether his absence was at the request of the player, Ajax, or a potential buyer.
Given United’s lack of activity in the window, United supporters don’t expect the midfielder to end up at Old Trafford.
The MEN reported in January that Van de Beek was on a shortlist of United’s playmaker targets along with Jack Grealish and James Maddison, although Maddison has since signed a contract extension at Leicester. Grealish became less attainable after his goal on the final day of the Premier League season ensured Aston Villa’s survival and eased any potential financial pressure on his boyhood club.
United are yet to reach a breakthrough in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho with just five weeks remaining in the window.
