Manchester United fans have demanded the club sign a new striker in order to mount a sustainable Premier League title challenge.
United were rejected by Erling Haaland in December 2019 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to add to his forward line.
Anthony Martial ended the season with a career-best goal return and Edinson Cavani was signed in the summer in order to add experience to the forward line.
However, during the current campaign, Martial has struggled immensely – netting only two league goals – with many fans calling for Cavani to be permanently promoted to the role of first-choice striker following his impressive performances of late.
Martial attracted criticism for his role in Sheffield United’s second goal which condemned United to defeat at Old Trafford on Thursday after idly watching the attack manifest only yards away from him.
With Cavani in the twilight of his career and only representing a short-term solution, United fans have called for Solskjaer to target a world-class centre-forward to complete their front line.
By doing so, they believe United can mount a serious and sustainable challenge against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Martial has been backed to return to form by Solskjaer who continues to stand by the Frenchman.
He believes the 25-year-old shouldn’t be exempt from criticism following the defeat by Sheffield United but added the entire team underperformed at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer said: “The whole team will probably get criticism tonight and myself as well. I don’t think Anthony is exempt from that. We should all be criticised because we didn’t perform.
“I know Antho, he’s working really hard in training, working on his finishing, working on his movement, so I’ve got no qualms that he’ll come good.”
